Joel Pettigrew is an Assistant Director of Student Activities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he consults for MIT’s 500+ student organizations on event policy and planning, and has received a masters from Ohio State and a bachelors from Texas A&M. He is probably drinking coffee, reading a book, or obsessing over that one hilarious gif and posting it to Twitter immediately at @therealjoelp.
Workshop Title: Intent, Impact,Language, & #Inclusivity
Workshop Description: Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of certain commonplace phrases that damage community and why they do so, even though the intent of that language may be positive. Attendees will also leave the session with numerous follow up resources, as well as tips and tricks for appropriately responding to instances of inclusion-damaging language, and how to move forward together as an inclusive and welcoming community.
