This workshop will emphasize the role Black youth play as innovators and artists, recognizing not only their potential to transform culture but to enact social change as well. Too often Black kids are restricted to predetermined fields; but even within socially-imposed boundaries they are able to redefine popular culture. And it is culture that will drive most of the discussion. What is Black culture? How is it used to form social identities/roles? How can all of these factors be disseminated through channels of social change? These are all important questions, beneficial to anyone interested in media as a medium for social change. Most importantly though, it will benefit action-minded Black youth, especially individuals wondering about the ways their culture and their activism intersect.
